Pneumatically Actuated Fire Suppression Systems (PAFSS)
Pneumatically Actuated Fire Suppression Systems
There are many stuations where dealing with a fire at source will both minimise the damage of valuable assets by extinguishing the fire early and before it more fully develops, enabling a quicker recovery of operations.
The range offered by TVF (UK) Limited builds on years of experience and technical knowledge acquired in the fire extinguisher industry.
Our PAFSS can cover a range of applications and can be tailored to customer requirements, however, the following common features apply:
- Simple to install and cost effective to maintain
- Totally self contained, requiring no electrical source and remaining operational during power interruption
- Systems include detection / discharge tubing, superbly engineered specialist valves / regulators and pressure vessels containing an appropriately selected fire extinguishing agent
- Unique features derived from innovative technology
Priciples of Operation
The heart of any TVF PAFSS is the special detection tubing which acts as a linear heat and flame detector. The pressurised tubing is completely flexible, tough enough to withstand the harshest of conditions and can be run throughout the installation adjacent to identified fire risks.
Upon flame or heat impringement, the tube ruptures at the hot spot and by depressurisation the cylinder valve is activated to operate the extinguishing system. No external energy or power is needed for detection or actuation.
The main features of these specialised systems are:
- Linear heat and flame detection allows for an unlimited number of detection points
- Flexible detection tubing can be located adjacent to the identified risk areas, resulting in fast reaction
- Failsafe by design principles and simplicity
- Flexible tube remains unaffected by dirt, dust, debris, oil, vibrations in nearly all industrial environments
- No need for any external energy or power supply for detection or actuation
Direct PAFSS are efficient and simple self-activating systems for small enclosed hazard areas. They are failsafe against malfunction.
Upon flame impringement or heat the pressurised detection tube which is connected to a cylinder containing the suppression agent ruptures with a burst at the hottest point. The agent is then discharged through the burst hole directly at the heart of the fire.
Direct Systems are available in Low Pressure and High Pressure format, depending on the most appropriate extinguishant selected.
Indirect PAFSS are efficient and simple self-activating systems for larger enclosed and even open hazard areas.
Upon flame impringement or heat the pressurised detection tube will burst and by depressurisation will activate the cylinder valve to open. The agent is then released through separate pipework and nozzles which is aiming at the hazard areas.
Indirect Systems are available in Low Pressure and High Pressure format, depending on the most appropriate extinguishant selected.
Range of Extinguishants
It is clear that specific risks require specific extinguishing materials. Possible Materials that can be used in TVF PAFSS include:
- ABC Powder
- AFFF (Foam)
- Novec 1230

Fire Successfully Extinguished in CNC Machine
At just after 2:30pm on Friday 7 September 2012, a fire broke at an engineering company’s premises in High Wycombe. The fire was isolated to their XYZ CT 52 LTY machine. The fire was a result of heat combustion igniting the lubrication oil while the U drill was machining a mild steel component. The Pneumatically Actuated Fire Suppression System (PAFSS) Novec 2kg system activated and instantaneously extinguished the fire and safely shut down the unit - saving a £90,000 machine and potentially the entire site from burning down.
This system, now available to order, was recently installed by the suppression department of TVF (UK) Limited and is one of 5 supplied to protect each of the machine’s operated by this customer.
Paul Holliman explained, "I was not on the shop floor when the fire took place, but as a result of the system working instantaneously we were able to have this machine up and working again on Monday morning. During the incident automatic production on the shop floor continued on the 4 remaining machines, and it was business as usual”.
The speedy supply of replacement Novec extinguishant and re-commissioning of the system was carried out by the Suppression Department Manager of TVF (UK) Limited, who has been instrumental in introducing this new application to TVF’s range of suppression systems.
He stated, "This demonstrates the effectiveness of the system when installed and commissioned to the required standard by our team of qualified installers. I have complete confidence that PAFSS is a strong and cost effective fire suppression system suited to the oil lubricated CNC machine environment. Having the spare parts and equipment readily available in-stock for immediate delivery made the re-commissioning of the system a straightforward and quick operation.”
